1. Stones and liberties
Black plays first. Stones are placed on intersections. Connected stones of one colour form a group sharing liberties (adjacent empty points).
2. Captures, suicide and ko
A group with no liberties is captured and removed. Suicide is prohibited. Immediately retaking a ko is illegal.
3. Scoring (area rules)
Score = stones on the board + surrounded empty points. White receives komi. The game ends after two consecutive passes.
